Introduction

I was planning to write about something else this week. Then Google dropped Pics.

If you haven't heard about it yet: Google just released a new AI image tool built directly into Workspace. It's not a standalone app you have to learn. It's right there in Docs, Slides, and soon Drive.

And honestly? It might be the most practical AI image tool I've seen this year.

What Google Pics Actually Does

FeatureWhat It Means
Built into Docs/SlidesNo tab-switching. Edit images where you work.
Point-and-editTap any object or text, describe what you want changed
Text rewritingChange or translate text inside images
Upscale to 4KExport professional-grade resolution
Quick croppingOne-click format for web, social, print

Why This Matters (That Other Tools Miss)

Most AI image tools are built for one of two audiences:

  1. Artists โ€” Midjourney, Leonardo โ€” powerful but steep learning curve
  2. Non-designers who need a "dumbed down" interface โ€” Canva, Adobe Express

What's Different About Google Pics

Google Pics sits somewhere else entirely. It's built for people who don't want to learn a new tool, and don't need advanced features โ€” they just need to generate or edit an image while they're already working.

If you're a freelancer creating social graphics between client emails? This is for you.

If you're a small business owner making presentation visuals? This is for you.

If you're a content creator who needs quick visuals without opening Canva? This is for you.

The Real Question

Is Google Pics better than Canva? Depends on what you need.

If you already live in Google Workspace, Pics is a no-brainer. It removes the friction of switching apps, exporting, and re-importing.

If you need template libraries, brand kits, or more design control, you'll still reach for Canva.

What I've Learned

I've tested Pics over the past week. Here's what stood out:

What works:

  • The point-and-edit feature is genuinely useful. Click an object, type "make it blue," and it happens.
  • Text editing inside images works better than any other tool I've tried.
  • Upscaling to 4K is fast and clean.

What doesn't:

  • It's not a serious design tool. Don't expect Adobe-level control.
  • Free users are locked out โ€” it's for Workspace and AI subscribers only.
  • The generative quality is good but not at Midjourney's level.

What Changed

The last time Google launched a major image tool, it was 2021. That was Google Photos editing features. Years of silence. Meanwhile, Canva and Adobe dominated the market.

Pics signals something different: Google is integrating AI image work directly into its core productivity suite. It's not a standalone product. It's a feature inside what you already use.

My Take

If you're not using Workspace, Pics doesn't matter to you. Midjourney and Canva are still better for their respective use cases.

But if you're already paying for Workspace? Pics is now an asset you didn't have to buy separately. And that's what makes it interesting.

The market shift here isn't about quality. It's about convenience. Google Pics doesn't win on features โ€” it wins on being right there.

Honorable Mentions

  • Canva โ€” Still the best for templates and quick design work
  • Adobe Express โ€” Better for brand consistency and professional design
  • Midjourney V7 โ€” Still unmatched for artistic quality
